at the Sir Harry Oakes Chateau

Chateau Guest Book

Chateau Guest Book
The Chateau Guest Book, which was used at the Chateau from September 1934 to August 1948. A wide range of visitors from across the globe illustrate the interest inspired by the Lake Shore Mine and Kirkland Lake camp. The Chateau was left as a Guest House for visitors when the Oakes family left the area in the 1930’s and settled more permanently in Niagara Falls; visitors included intellectuals, investors, and politicians from places across the US, Southern Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe), South Africa, Fiji, Australia, the Bahamas, Peru, Scotland, plus many more. Even some of Harry Oakes’ children stayed at the Chateau during his murder trial in 1943 to avoid the chaos and trauma of the trial and the press.
