Sir Harry Oakes Memorial Book

Sir Harry Oakes Memorial Book
The Sir Harry Oakes Memorial Book was given to Lady Eunice Oakes by the Board of Directors at the Lake Shore Mine in 1943 as a gesture of sympathy upon the death of her husband. “Sir Harry Oakes, Bart” is engraved in gold on the front cover; Bart being the abbreviation for a baronet, which Harry was awarded in 1939. A baronet is referred to as “Sir” but is not considered a knight, they actually rank above all but two knighthoods. The intricate leaves, branches and acorns adorning the inside of the book were designed and hand painted by Group of 7 artist A. J. Casson.
