Doctor's Bag

Doctor's Bag
A Doctor’s bag which once belonged to Kirkland Lake physician Dr. D. B. Messenger. Doctors used bags such as this at the turn of the 19th Century and into the half of the 20th Century. They would most often be used for house calls and rural visits. As doctors often needed to travel long distances to attend to patients, their portable bag needed to include all possible necessities in medicine and supplies; everything from aspirin, scissors, gauze, bandaids, forceps, ligatures, syringes and stethoscopes would be housed in its compartments.
